Communication

At Curnow we recognise that communication is key to learning and to many areas of daily living, including making relationships, developing independence and autonomy and participating in the wider world.  We are committed to developing each student's communication skills using the expertise of our teachers, support network including the Speech and Language Therapists and Specialist Intervention Team and the deep understanding of our parents.  From the very start of each student’s journey through schooling we are attuned to looking for what are the favoured methods of each individual and where their skills and talents will support future learning, as well as supporting them to overcome barriers to learning, including sensory and physical barriers. All pupils have an All About Me or a CV, available to view in their classroom.  This provides key information regarding student’s communication and how best to support their speech, language and communication needs.

Here are some of the members of the team that have specific roles in supporting communication across the school.

Sam Murray is English lead and oversee's the Communication Offer in school.

Kate Ford is our Specialist Intervention Co-ordinator and works closely with SALT.

Ayla Dickenson and Neilssa Meakin are our Makaton Trainers.

Further information on some of the communication methods used in school are documented below.  Please contact the class teacher if you would like to find out about ways to support your child.
